Hasan and Husain

Hasan & Husain

Husan and Husain to me seem to work well in their collaborative efforts to document (fictionally) the situation as applies to Islamic culture. This is curious as it shows a sense of independence and challenge to what has been seen historically in my eyes as a dogmatic and rigid culture, that leaves no room for questioning or poking fun, even.

The work of the duo is curious I think for a number of reasons. It resonates with established work by photographers wang quingsong and AES&F (another collaborative) in both the style and subject matter. The works can be surrealist and yet they can have an interesting viewing effect. I have myself staged a number of projects and it is often one of the most rewarding creative photographic processes I find, as you get to invent from scratch (concept upwards) all that the images will contain.

From the point of view of this project I think that the work is especially topical and relevant as it seems to be something of a taboo for many European artists to comment on the issues of Islamic culture or rather fear of reprisal might block the process.

I'm a student photographer studying through the OCA a UK based arts university. I'm in the foundation year of my studies and enjoying it immensely. I'm also a yoga teacher and co-founder of Bodhiyoga a buddhism based yoga teacher training program that runs in the UK and Spain each year. As a photographer I'm interested in all forms of fine art. I find the arts really important in my life. I love nature and aim to be in the outdoors as much as I can. Generally I think that all the different strands of my life are flowing to towards self development in the greatest sense of the term. The arts, buddhist practice yoga and meditation are all tools to that end. I feel committed to communication the these values in the world both through the visual arts as well as teaching.
